Orris and Timble

 Orris and Timble

written by Kate DiCamillo

illustrated by Cameron Moc

Orris and Timble is a tender, quietly magical story about an unlikely friendship between a lonely old owl named Orris and a small, anxious rat named Timble.

Orris lives a peaceful but solitary life in an abandoned barn, where he spends his days watching the world and telling stories to himself to pass the time. Everything changes when Timble, a nervous little rat, unexpectedly appears and begins to worry—about owls, about danger, about just about everything. Orris, in his calm and gentle way, doesn’t scare him away. Instead, he listens, comforts him, and slowly builds a fragile but meaningful friendship.

As the two grow closer, they learn that bravery doesn’t always mean being fearless—it can also mean showing up for someone else, even when you’re unsure yourself. Together, Orris and Timble discover that companionship can make even the quietest, most uncertain world feel a little safer, and a lot more hopeful.

Orris and Timble- The Beginning
In a quiet world just beginning to take shape, something small stirs—curiosity, courage, and the first spark of connection. “The Beginning” follows a gentle unfolding of discovery, where new friendships are fragile but full of promise, and even the smallest moments can change everything. It’s a story about stepping into the unknown and realizing that beginnings are never just endings in disguise—they’re invitations to something new.

Orris and Timble- Lost and Found
When something precious goes missing, the world feels a little off balance. In “Lost and Found,” characters learn that getting lost isn’t always about where you are—it can be about how you feel inside. As paths cross and misunderstandings unravel, the story gently explores the idea that what matters most has a way of finding its way back to you… sometimes in the most unexpected form.

Orris and Timble- Star Stories
On a quiet night when the sky feels especially close, stories begin to rise with the stars. “Star Stories” is a dreamy collection of wonder-filled moments where imagination connects everyday life to something vast and glowing above. It’s about hope, memory, and the idea that every light in the sky might be holding a story waiting to be told—and maybe even a wish waiting to be heard.

Wild Fairies

Wild Fairies

written by Brandi Dougherty

illustrated by Renée Kurilla.

Brandi Dougherty’s Wild Fairies series is a sweet, magical collection that blends friendship, adventure, and nature into stories that feel both gentle and exciting for young readers. Each book introduces imaginative fairy characters with unique personalities while keeping the stories approachable for children who are beginning to read independently. Renée Kurilla’s charming illustrations add warmth and whimsy to every page, making the fairy world feel lively, cozy, and full of wonder.

This series is especially easy to recommend for children who love woodland animals, magical adventures, and stories centered on kindness and teamwork. The books have a comforting tone while still giving readers enough mystery and excitement to keep them engaged. They also work beautifully as either read-alouds or early chapter books for growing readers who want something imaginative without being overwhelming.

Wild Fairies #1: Daisy’s Decorating Dilemma

Spring has arrived in Sugar Oak, and the Wild Fairies are busy preparing for the magical Blossom Bash! Daisy loves helping her friends, but when everyone disagrees about how the celebration should look, she isn’t sure how to make everyone happy. Can Daisy find a way for every fairy’s ideas to bloom together before the big party begins?

Wild Fairies #2: Lily’s Water Woes

Lily loves her fairy friends, but being part mermaid means she can never stay far from the water. While the others explore forests and beaches, Lily worries she will always be left behind. With the help of her loyal frog friend Splash and a thoughtful surprise from the other fairies, Lily may discover that true friendship always finds a way.

Wallace and Grace Review

Each story blends a light “whodunit” feel with humor and heart, making it engaging without ever feeling too intense for younger readers.

With short chapters, playful illustrations, and lots of dialogue, these books are especially approachable for kids who are just starting to gain confidence reading on their own. The mysteries are simple enough to follow but still satisfying to solve, giving young readers that great “I figured it out!” feeling.

Overall, it’s a great stepping stone series—perfect for kids moving out of early readers and into chapter books, especially those who enjoy a little curiosity, teamwork, and problem-solving mixed into their stories.

Books by Apryl Stott

Books by Apryl Stott

written and illustrated by Apryl Stott

I first came across Apryl Stott’s illustrations in a church magazine, and I was immediately drawn to them. There was something about the soft watercolor style that felt calming, almost quiet in the best way, and I loved how much the illustrations added to the stories.

That curiosity led me to look up more of her work, which is how I found these picture books. The stories and illustrations really fit together beautifully—neither one outshines the other. Instead, they work in harmony, creating this gentle, thoughtful reading experience.

There’s a softness and lightness to both the artwork and the storytelling that makes the books feel calm and comforting, while still being engaging and meaningful for kids.

Coco and Bear

The Coco and Bear series by Apryl Stott follows the friendship between Coco, a kind little girl, and Bear, a gentle bear who is often misunderstood by others. At the center of the stories is their growing bond, built on trust, kindness, and seeing each other for who they truly are.

Coco is the one who consistently notices Bear’s goodness and stands by him, even when others don’t understand him right away. Bear, in return, finds comfort and confidence in Coco’s friendship. Together, they move through simple childhood moments that highlight emotions like bravery, belonging, communication, and empathy.

The series tells quiet, meaningful stories that feel both comforting and emotionally rich for young readers. With soft watercolor illustrations and gentle storytelling, these books work beautifully as read-a-louds and are especially well-suited for preschool and early elementary children.

Share Some Kindness, Bring Some Light

When Coco meets Bear, she sees something others don’t—kindness behind a quiet, misunderstood exterior. As the forest animals keep their distance, Coco chooses to step closer, showing that friendship and compassion can shine even in uncertain moments. A tender story about looking beyond appearances and choosing kindness first.

Find Your Brave

Coco is excited for a special moment she’s dreamed about—but when the time comes, nerves creep in. With Bear by her side, she begins to discover that bravery doesn’t mean not feeling scared; it means showing up anyway. A gentle reminder that courage can look different for everyone.

I particularly like this book.  I love how it shows how being afraid or nervous doesn't mean that you can't do the things you want to do.

Speak Your Heart

Even the best friends don’t always understand each other right away. When Coco and Bear face a misunderstanding, feelings get tangled and words don’t come easily. Through patience and honesty, they learn that speaking gently and listening closely can help heal hurt feelings and bring hearts back together.

Join Our Family

Coco and Bear’s world grows a little bigger when someone new needs a place to belong. As they welcome change together, they discover that family isn’t just about who you are—it’s about who you choose to love and include. A warm, comforting story about belonging, acceptance, and making space for others.

Ruby's Tools

The Ruby’s Tools series by Apryl Stott centers on Ruby, a thoughtful young girl who is learning that growing up comes with all kinds of emotional ups and downs. Instead of focusing on “fixing” problems in a big or overwhelming way, Ruby discovers that she already has something powerful inside her—her own set of “tools” for navigating life    .

Each book highlights a different everyday situation children can easily relate to, such as making friends, handling mistakes, or working through uncomfortable feelings. As Ruby moves through these moments, she learns to lean on skills like honesty, patience, courage, empathy, and trying again when things don’t go as planned. The idea of “tools” gives children a simple, memorable way to understand emotional regulation and social problem-solving without feeling pressured or corrected.

With Apryl Stott’s signature soft watercolor illustrations and gentle storytelling style, the series feels calm, reassuring, and approachable. It’s especially well suited for preschool and early elementary readers, and it works beautifully as a read-aloud for helping kids talk through feelings in a safe, comforting way.

Ruby’s Tools for Making Friends

Ruby wants to be a good friend, but sometimes making new connections feels a little tricky. When she notices other kids playing without her, Ruby feels unsure of what to do. With a little reflection and her special “tools,” she learns that kindness, courage, and simply trying again can open the door to friendship. A gentle story about taking the first step and finding your place with others.

Ruby’s Tools for Fixing Mistakes

When Ruby makes a mistake, she feels disappointed in herself and unsure how to make things right. Instead of giving up, she turns to her tools—like honesty, patience, and trying again—to help her work through it. Along the way, Ruby learns that mistakes aren’t the end of the story, but part of learning and growing. A reassuring, relatable story about grace, growth, and second chances.

Stand alone books

Almost Always Best, Best Friends

Almost Always Best, Best Friends is a warm, honest look at friendship through its ups and downs. Two close friends learn that even the strongest bonds don’t mean everything will always be perfect. There are misunderstandings, feelings get hurt, and moments of distance—but there’s also forgiveness, kindness, and coming back together. With its gentle tone and emotional depth, this story reassures young readers that true friendship can stretch, bend, and still hold strong.

Welcome Spring

In Welcome Spring, Apryl Stott captures the quiet beauty of change as the world begins to wake up again after winter. Through gentle storytelling and soft watercolor illustrations, young readers follow the joy of noticing small signs of spring—new growth, warmer days, and the feeling of fresh beginnings. It’s a calming, nature-focused picture book that encourages children to slow down and appreciate the world around them as it transforms.

The Pet Club

written by Lisa Mantchev

illustrated by Taeeun Yoo

These two books—Strictly No Elephants and The Trouble with Giraffes—aren’t a formal series, but they absolutely read like they belong together. Both Lisa Mantchev stories circle around the same big idea: what happens when someone (or some very lovable animal companion) doesn’t quite fit in.

What I really like about them is that they don’t just tell kids “be kind” in a general way. They actually show what inclusion looks like in real life—sometimes awkward, sometimes creative, but always worth the effort. The tone is gentle, the message is clear, and the illustrations carry a lot of the emotional weight in a really soft, accessible way.

These are the kinds of books that work beautifully as read-alouds, especially when you want something that opens up conversations without feeling heavy-handed.

Strictly No Elephants

A boy and his pet elephant are turned away from Pet Club because elephants aren’t allowed. Instead of giving up, they set out to create a new kind of club—one where everyone is welcome, no matter how different they are. A sweet, simple story about inclusion and making your own space when you don’t fit the rules.

The Trouble with Giraffes

When a giraffe joins Pet Club, things quickly get complicated—he’s just too big for the space they’ve always used. The kids have to figure out how to adjust, rethink, and make room for a new friend. A gentle story about flexibility, problem-solving, and learning that belonging sometimes means changing the space, not the friend.

Duck and Hippo

 Duck and Hipppo

by Jonathan Landon

illustrated by Andrew Joyner

The Duck and Hippo series by Jonathan London, illustrated by Andrew Joyner, is a small, easy-to-love series centered on two very different friends—Duck, who is full of energy and big ideas, and Hippo, who prefers things a little slower and more predictable. Together, they navigate everyday moments like celebrations, surprises, and getting a little lost, all with gentle humor and a steady focus on friendship.

What makes this series stand out is how flexible it is for different ages and reading stages. It works beautifully as a read-aloud picture book series for preschoolers, thanks to its simple storytelling, clear emotions, and fun, expressive illustrations that are engaging without being overwhelming. At the same time, the short sentences, repetition, and approachable vocabulary make it a great early reader for kids just beginning to read independently.

The illustrations are especially strong—bright, playful, and full of personality—helping carry the story while adding humor and emotion to every page. Overall, this is one of those rare series that grows with kids, working just as well on a lap during preschool story time as it does for a beginning reader building confidence on their own.

Duck and Hippo in the Rainstorm
Duck is ready for an adventure—rain or shine! But Hippo isn’t so sure about splashing out into a storm. Can these two friends find a way to enjoy the day together? A sweet story about trying new things and sticking by a friend.

Duck and Hippo: Lost and Found                                                                     Duck is on the move and ready for adventure—but Hippo isn’t so sure about wandering too far. When the two friends get separated, suddenly nothing feels quite right. Will Duck and Hippo find their way back to each other? A gentle, reassuring story about friendship, feeling lost, and the comfort of being found again.

Duck and Hippo Give Thanks
Duck is busy, busy, busy—but Hippo wants to slow down and enjoy the moment. As the day unfolds, Duck begins to notice all the little things there are to be thankful for. A cozy, heartfelt story about gratitude and friendship.

Duck and Hippo The Secret Valentine
Duck has a special surprise planned for Hippo—but keeping a secret isn’t always easy! As Duck’s plan starts to unravel, these two friends discover that kindness matters more than any surprise. A charming tale of friendship and thoughtfulness.

About Me

I’m a mom of eight.  One boy and 7 girls.  I have been raising young readers for over 20 years. I’ve read a lot of books, and reread the good ones time and time again.

I’ve seen it all: great stories with disappointing illustrations, and beautiful books with not much to say. I look for the rare ones that get both right—engaging stories paired with artwork that brings them to life. I look for both. I’m drawn to picture books where the writing and illustrations work together to create something truly engaging, even on the tenth read.

I’m unapologetically picky. I skip books where misbehavior is a joke and focus on the ones that are truly worth your time.

Here you’ll find honest reviews, carefully chosen favorites, and books kids genuinely come back to. More age groups will be added as my review library continues to grow.

The Princess Truly picture books by Kelly Greenawalt caught my attention in a bit of a roundabout way. I originally discovered the early reader Princess Truly books while searching for something engaging for my first grader, and we really enjoyed them. They were fun, accessible, and had just the right mix of simple text and imaginative storytelling to keep early readers excited.

The illustrations are bright, colorful, and full of personality, really bringing Princess Truly’s world to life in a way that immediately pulls kids in. Each story feels like a small, self-contained adventure, often sparked by everyday moments that quickly grow into something playful and imaginative.

What I especially like is how they keep that same spirit from the early readers—confidence, creativity, and kindness—but wrap it in a format that works beautifully for read-aloud time. The stories are light, fun, and easy to follow, making them perfect for younger listeners or as a cozy bedtime read.

Overall, these picture books feel like a natural extension of a series we already loved—just a little more visual, a little more whimsical, and just as full of heart.

The Knight Owl

 The Knight Owl

written and illustrated by Christopher Denise

These books first caught my eye because of the charming illustrations. I picked them up from our local library on a whim, and they quickly became the kind of stories we read again and again at home. They just have that easy warmth kids lean into.

Later, one of my older daughters came across the Christmas title while we were in France and was so excited to tell me about it—completely unaware it was already part of a series we loved. It turned into one of those small, sweet moments where a book quietly threads itself through different seasons of your life.

The Knight Owl series by Christopher Denise follows a small but determined owl who dreams of becoming a knight in a grand medieval castle. Despite his size, Owl refuses to give up on his ambition, discovering that true bravery isn’t about strength or stature, but about heart, loyalty, and showing up when it matters most. Across the series, he faces new challenges—at knight school, in moments of unexpected danger, and even in festive, wintry adventures—that test his courage and deepen his friendships. With cozy storytelling and beautifully expressive illustrations, the books blend humor, heart, and gentle adventure in a way that lingers well beyond the final page.

Knight Owl
In a castle full of towering knights and big expectations, a small owl dreams of joining the royal guard. But being brave isn’t easy when you’re the smallest one in the room. When danger suddenly threatens the kingdom, Owl discovers that courage, clever thinking, and heart might be the greatest strengths of all.

Knight Owl and Early Bird
Owl is back—and this time he’s not alone. When a lively new friend arrives at knight school, Owl must learn what it means to work together, even when teamwork feels tricky. As challenges grow bigger and the stakes get higher, Owl and Early Bird discover that friendship might just be the strongest armor of all.

Knight Owl: A Little Christmas

A cozy winter has arrived at the castle, but Knight Owl notices something isn’t quite right—Christmas spirit seems to be missing! As snow falls and the kingdom prepares for celebration, Owl sets out on a festive quest to help bring warmth, joy, and cheer back to the castle. With courage, kindness, and a bit of holiday magic, Owl discovers that the greatest gift of all might be sharing the spirit of Christmas with others.

I’m unapologetically picky. I skip books where misbehavior is a joke and focus on the ones that are truly worth your time.

Here you’ll find honest reviews, carefully chosen favorites, and books kids genuinely come back to. More age groups will be added as my review library continues to grow.
