Duck and Hippo

 Duck and Hipppo

by Jonathan Landon

illustrated by Andrew Joyner

The Duck and Hippo series by Jonathan London, illustrated by Andrew Joyner, is a small, easy-to-love series centered on two very different friends—Duck, who is full of energy and big ideas, and Hippo, who prefers things a little slower and more predictable. Together, they navigate everyday moments like celebrations, surprises, and getting a little lost, all with gentle humor and a steady focus on friendship.

What makes this series stand out is how flexible it is for different ages and reading stages. It works beautifully as a read-aloud picture book series for preschoolers, thanks to its simple storytelling, clear emotions, and fun, expressive illustrations that are engaging without being overwhelming. At the same time, the short sentences, repetition, and approachable vocabulary make it a great early reader for kids just beginning to read independently.

The illustrations are especially strong—bright, playful, and full of personality—helping carry the story while adding humor and emotion to every page. Overall, this is one of those rare series that grows with kids, working just as well on a lap during preschool story time as it does for a beginning reader building confidence on their own.

About Me

I’m a mom of eight.  One boy and 7 girls.  I have been raising young readers for over 20 years. I’ve read a lot of books, and reread the good ones time and time again.

I’ve seen it all: great stories with disappointing illustrations, and beautiful books with not much to say. I look for the rare ones that get both right—engaging stories paired with artwork that brings them to life. I look for both. I’m drawn to picture books where the writing and illustrations work together to create something truly engaging, even on the tenth read.

I’m unapologetically picky. I skip books where misbehavior is a joke and focus on the ones that are truly worth your time.

Here you’ll find honest reviews, carefully chosen favorites, and books kids genuinely come back to. More age groups will be added as my review library continues to grow.
