Bear and Friend
by Karma Wilson
illustrated by Jane Chapman
I have seen these books over the years. The first one to enter our library was "Bear Stays Up for Christmas." Since then, we have had the opportunity to add a few more.
Bear and Friends books by Karma Wilson are a cozy, go-to stack of read-alouds. Centered around a lovable, slightly bumbling bear and his circle of loyal woodland friends, the series blends gentle humor, strong rhyme, and heartfelt moments into stories that feel both comforting and memorable. Whether Bear is sleeping through a party, trying to stay awake for Christmas, or learning how to handle big feelings, each book focuses on simple but meaningful themes—friendship, kindness, gratitude, and growing up.
With warm, expressive illustrations by Jane Chapman and a rhythmic, almost sing-song text, these books are especially well-suited for read-aloud time. Some titles lean into classic storytelling, while others introduce early concepts like counting, colors, and opposites, making the series versatile for a range of ages. At its best, the Bear series delivers exactly what young readers need: repetition, reassurance, and stories that feel like coming home.
